Cabinet upheaval after Full Council budget vote

The Council voted on 26 February to freeze council tax against the advice of the Conservative led Cabinet that had proposed an increase of 1.97%. Many of the Conservative group followed the group leader, Fiona Ferguson, in voting for a council tax freeze.

In the aftermath, Jim Currie, Leader of the Council, removed Stephen Rushworth from the Cabinet because of his vote against the Cabinet proposal. Conservative Cabinet members, Lance Kennedy and Carolyn Rule, resigned from the Conservative group because of the group's position against the Cabinet, but they remain on the Cabinet as Independent councillors.

It should be remembered, that Fiona Ferguson had been on Jim Currie's Cabinet for a short time as Corporate Resources portfolio holder before she had resigned in early February supposedly in protest against the Council's using Capita and its lie-detection tests when interviewing residents claiming single person council tax discount.
