Street lights: trial of night time dimming and switching off

Cornwall Council has been undertaking a trial street lighting part night switch off in a small number of villages in September-October 2012, including Probus. This follows the installation of the new lighting control system infrastructure and its aim is to reduce the Council’s energy bill and carbon emissions.

The trial lasted for a period of six weeks, commencing on Monday 3 September 2012. The lighting operated with the following profiles during the trial.

For the results of the survey, see survey results.

Lights switch off

During the period in weeks 3 and 4, whilst most of the street lights were switched off between 00:30 and 05:30, a few lights have remained switched on. These were:

Fore Street: 2 lights near the Hawkins Arms, and 5 lights on the lower part of Fore Street between the old post office and the petrol station.

Tregony Road: 2 lights towards the upper end of Tregony Road towards the surgery.

Footpaths running between roads on estates: path from Village Hall to Gwell-an-Nans, path from Parkengear Vean cul-de-sac back to Tregony Road, path from Church View Road to Bosnoweth, path from Bosnoweth to the football pitch, path from Bosnoweth to the Tregony Road car park, path from end of Carne View Road to Tregony Road, path from Church View Road to Tregony Road near The Square, 2 paths that run from Cullen View to Chapel Street and Ladock Road.

In addition, there are some lights owned by the parish council that are on separate power supplies and not controlled by Cornwall Council. They are the Jubilee lamp in The Square, 1 light on The Bank, 1 light at the back of the church, 3 lights on Wagg Lane. They have remained on at normal levels.

The light on Amelia Close is a privately owned light.

The lights in Fairfields have not yet been adopted and integrated into the Cornwall Council system and so have remained on.

Upon completion of the trial, the street lights will revert to their normal operation of Dusk until Dawn, pending evaluation of the trial.

I would welcome any comments that you have on the trial. Please follow the link to the street lighting trial survey. (Please note that the survey will close on 22 October.)
